OpenAI officially launched its self-serve OpenAI Ads Manager, enabling native, sponsored ad cards to be inserted directly into live ChatGPT conversations.

As an agency, our job isn't just to buy traditional ad space, it’s to find the next alpha. That’s why we are actively onboarding our clients into the ChatGPT ad network.

But let's be entirely honest with each other: this platform is in its early stages. It is fundamentally different from anything you've built on Google or Meta. ChatGPT represents incredible, uncrowded, intent-rich real estate, but it also comes with real structural limitations.

To help you decide if you should be an early adopter, here is the good, the bad, and the ugly of running ads on ChatGPT.

Search Ads & Semantic Intent (and a Surprise Layer of Tracking)

Traditional search marketing relies on flat keywords. If someone types "project management tool," Google guesses what they mean. ChatGPT ads operate on conversational context and semantic intent.

When a user spends 20 minutes feeding multi-turn prompts into ChatGP (debugging a Python script, outlining a marketing workflow, or planning a custom vacation) the AI understands the entire continuous thought process. Your ad appears as a single, dedicated, clearly labeled "Sponsored Card" directly below the AI's organic response.

Why adopting ChatGPT ads is a major competitive advantage:

You are not competing with your competitors

On ChatGPT, there is one single sponsored slot per relevant response block. You own the user’s immediate visual focus. While on Google, your link is competing with an endless sea of maps, shopping feeds, and 4 other direct competitors.

Conversion optimization is built in

OpenAI already supports a tracking Pixel, a server-side Conversions API, conversion reporting, and dedicated Reach, Clicks, and Conversions campaign objectives. CPA (Cost-Per-Action) bidding and optimization are in the early stages of rollout.

Unlike traditional ad managers, OpenAI requires measurement to be configured before advertisers can activate conversion-focused campaigns; meaning the groundwork for performance optimization is already built in.

Measurement infrastructure is more mature than expected:

OpenAI already supports a Measurement Pixel, Conversions API, conversion reporting, and conversion-based campaign objectives.

For advertisers who use Meta and Google nore often, this means OpenAI is building on a performance marketing foundation rather than a simple sponsorship model. While optimization capabilities are still evolving, the underlying measurement framework is already surprisingly robust.

These ads show to high-intent purchasers

Users aren't mindlessly scrolling a feed here; they are in active problem-solving mode. While average Click-Through Rates (CTR) are modest, early reports suggest traffic quality may be stronger than traditional display environments because users are actively researching and problem-solving.

Open AI’s Ads Do Not Rely On The Old Keyword Lists and Audience Signals

If your team tries to copy and paste your Google Ads strategy into OpenAI, your campaigns will stall. The platform has thrown out the traditional PPC Google Ads playbook.

You Will Now Be Targeting with "Context Hints"

There is no keyword planner, no auto-complete, and no automated audience builder. Instead, OpenAI utilizes Context Hints; one-to-two-sentence descriptions that you write to define the types of situations or frustrations a user might be working through.

Because there are no suggested topics or tools, most agencies will struggle and simply throw random keywords into that box.

The brands that win on OpenAI will be those backed by an agency that understands how to thoughtfully map intent clusters, segment personas, and craft conversational phrasing.

Geographic targeting currently supports country, state/region, and DMA-level targeting, making the platform viable for regional advertisers as well as national brands.

Open AI Ads Only Show Up in Free ChatGPT Accounts (The Catch for B2B)

Here is the most critical nuance that many marketers miss: OpenAI never shows ads to users on paid subscriptions.

If someone pays for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, or Enterprise, their workspace remains entirely ad-free. Your ads will only display to logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers.

This doesn't mean ChatGPT ads aren't viable for B2B, but it does change the audience mix. The platform may be particularly effective for reaching consumers, freelancers, small business owners, startup founders, and individual professionals researching solutions on their personal accounts.

For B2B brands, we see the strongest early opportunities in product-led growth (PLG), SMB, and individual practitioner audiences, while traditional enterprise and account-based marketing use cases may take longer to mature.

Open AI’s Ads Have Tight Copy Constraints & Beta Realities

Because the platform is fundamentally fresh, it lacks the deep, mature optimization tooling that digital marketers take for granted on older platforms.

If you jump in, you have to accept these current structural constraints:

These ads have aggressive text truncation

While the technical character limit for headlines is 50 characters and descriptions are 100, truncation happens incredibly quickly

In real-world layouts, headlines can cut off around 25–35 characters, and description text can truncate at just 48 characters. Copy must be ultra-punchy, value-first, and front-loaded to avoid being chopped in half.

The images are tiny thumbnails

Images must be square (256x256 px minimum) but serve as tiny thumbnail extensions rather than large, eye-catching focal points.

Abstract, cluttered lifestyle imagery fails completely in this text-first, clean environment.

They don’t offer "Agency Portal" (Yet)

OpenAI does not yet have an MCC-style master manager account for agencies. Each advertiser requires its own independent account, meaning agencies cannot natively manage multiple clients from a single umbrella dashboard.

How to structure Open AI ads?

To account for these nuances, we are building highly targeted, split-tested frameworks designed to discover exactly what converts for our clients:

Ad Group Focus Targeting Mechanism Creative Angle
Problem Awareness Context hints detailing symptoms and workflow frustrations. Value-first copy linking to highly practical tool templates, checklists, or calculators.
Vendor Comparison Context hints describing users evaluating software or service choices. Trust-first copy linking to clear landing pages with strong, undeniable social proof.

We recommend a starting pilot budget of $50 to $100 per day (comfortably clearing OpenAI's $25 campaign minimum), running consistently for a 2- to 3-week testing block

This window gives the contextual model enough runtime to learn how to map your unique value propositions against dynamic chat streams.

Is ChatGPT Ads Worth Investing In?

OpenAI Ads should not be a replacement for your core search or paid social engines. Consider it is a powerful, high-intent layer built to sit right between them.

By jumping into the platform now, you gain first-mover pricing, train your team on conversational intent marketing, and establish a foothold in the future of AI-driven search.

We are actively setting up pilot campaigns for our clients. If you want to put your brand directly into the conversations where your customers are solving their toughest problems, let’s talk.
